St. Charles, IL — System Sensor's new SP3 speakers are detailed in their “just released” product write-up. Questions such as: “How to select sound volume versus sound quality?” and “How to choose between volume and quality?” are answered.
When designing a fire alarm system, you will be forced to choose between sound volume and sound quality. At System Sensor, we traditionally focused our energy towards creating fidelity-quality speakers. In fact, our SpectrAlert SP2 series tops the industry in this area. Now, System Sensor is pleased to offer a second series of speakers: SpectrAlert SP3. This new series was created to add high sound-pressure level (SPL) products to System Sensor’s product line.
How to choose between volume and quality
Imagine a casino. Can you hear the people shouting in excitement and the slot machines ringing? The frequencies are broad and the ambient noise level is high. Now picture a library. Can you hear the sliding doors open as guests enter and the librarian shuffling books at checkout? Here, the ambient noise level is low.
NPFA requires speakers in both places to be heard 15dB above their ambient noise level. Therefore, in the casino, you will want speakers that produce higher sound output. The SP3 speakers cover less frequency, but, because of the greater sound output at every tap setting, you can install fewer speakers per area. SP3 speakers, in this situation, will save you money and still be heard.
In the library, if the SP3 speakers were used, the horns would be ear-piercing loud. If you installed fewer speakers, the sound quality would be poor. Because the ambient noise is low, System Sensor’s SP2 quality speakers would be the smart choice. Why?
SP2 speakers yield greater frequency response and lower total harmonic distortion, guaranteeing you an output that closely matches the source signal. These speakers also maintain a flatter frequency response across a broader frequency range to better reproduce the human voice. Other brands taper at the low and high ends.
More Features of SP2 and SP3 Series Speakers
Beyond their sound volume and quality, System Sensor speakers were designed with appearance and installation ease in mind. All our speakers mount to a standard 4 inch X 4 inch X 2 1/8 inch backbox with color-matching screws, unlike other brands that require a separate aesthetic grille. Other features include field-selectable power taps, available in 1/4, 1/2, 1 and 2 watts, and field-selectable voltage, available in 25 or 70.7 VRMS. The SP3 speakers offer substantially greater sound output at all tap settings.
System Sensor’s outdoor speakers are weatherproof. To test their durability, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) submerges the speakers in water for 24 hours before testing their sound quality. The speakers are also sprayed with multiple water nozzles and exposed to temperature and voltage extremes, corrosion and impact tests. These outdoor speakers can operate from minus 40 degrees to 151 degrees Fahrenheit.
